Latronico a land of emotions

The center

The city of Latronico includes two areas: an upper part where the historic center stands and a lower part where the commercial activities and offices of the town are concentrated. The historic center, in dialect “Capadavutu”, is characterized by the particular conformation of the houses which form the typical “Carrare” (a labyrinth of narrow streets that form corridors of a maximum of one meter large, between the external walls of the houses). There are also historic buildings, such as Palazzo Arcieri, and churches (Basilica Minore di S. Egidio Abate, Church of San Nicola).

You can also admire numerous portals in gray Latronico stone and votive shrines. In the lower part of the town is Piazza Umberto I°, the main center and the meeting place for the Latronichesi. Other districts branch off from the square, including Munisteriu, where a monastery of Basilian monks once stood, Fontana ‘a Villa and Viscigliu, of more recent construction with a higher concentration of inhabitants.

The surroundings

Three km from the center of Latronico is the hamlet of Calda, which is famous for the sulfur springs, the prehistoric caves, the municipal museums (Archeology, Thermalism, Rural civilization). It’s close to the Sinni river, the thermal complex with the accommodation facilities and the sports center with gym, swimming pools, 5-a-side football fields, and tennis.

A little more than 10 km away are the two hamlets of Agromonte Magnano and Agromonte Mileo, the two urban agglomerations outside the center with the majority of inhabitants, in whose territory there are impressive beech, oak, and chestnut woods. In these areas, it is usually during autumn walks to see mushrooms or wild asparagus among the uncontaminated and luxuriant nature. The two hamlets boast a good entrepreneurial activity and several productive settlements.
